Leaving comments on your site

If your site has a Comment on this page link at the bottom, you can point at anything on it and tell us what to change. No screenshots, no describing where it is. We get the exact bit you clicked.

What it is

A small tool built into the site. You click a link, click the thing that is wrong, type a sentence and send it. The note arrives with us along with the page it came from and the words that were on screen, so nobody has to work out which bit you meant.

It is invisible to everybody else. Nothing appears for someone visiting your site, and no comment is ever shown publicly.

Turning it on

  1. Scroll to the bottom of any page on your site.
  2. Click Comment on this page.
  3. A small black button appears in the bottom right corner. That is the tool.

Once you have clicked the link, this button follows you around the site.

It stays on while you move around the site and switches itself off when you close the tab. To put it away sooner, use ?gd-edit=0.

Signing in

The first time you send something you will be asked to sign in. Use the email address we set your access up with. If that is a Google or Google Workspace address you can sign in with Google, and if it is not, ask for a code by email instead.

A sign-in lasts a week, so most weeks you will do this once. Only the people we have added can leave comments. Anybody else who finds the button reaches a sign-in page and gets no further.

Leaving a comment

  1. Click the black button. It turns red, and a line appears saying Click an element to comment on it.
  2. Move the pointer over the page. Whatever you are about to pick lights up green.
  3. Click it.
  4. Type your note and click Send.

Say what you want instead of the thing that is there. “This should say Tuesday” is a perfect comment. So is “this photo feels too dark”.

Comments you have already left

Turn the tool on again and your open comments show as green dots pinned to the page. Click one to read it, change your own wording, or mark it resolved once it has been done. A dot turns amber while we are working on it.

What happens after you send one

It lands in our queue with the page and the thing you clicked attached. We do not answer inside the tool, so you will hear from us by email or you will simply see the change on the site. Leave as many as you like in one sitting. A list of small ones is easier for us than a long email.
